Job Description

Position Summary:

The Graduate Assistant for the Arts, Media, and Design Career Community and Marketing plays a crucial role in supporting the career development initiatives within the Career Center. This position will assist in positively affecting retention and career readiness issues by both the counseling function, but also with presentations to groups of students and working closely with Career Development Team staff on assigned projects. This is a learning opportunity in which the GA can expect to gain hands-on experience working with individuals, conducting presentations, and assisting with team projects. Additionally, the Graduate Assistant will actively contribute to the Career Center's marketing efforts as a member of the Marketing Team.

Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities

1:1 Service to Students (40%): 

  • Provide career coaching services to undergraduate/graduate students and alumni in the Arts, Media, and Design Career Community including, but not limited to: major/career exploration, resume/cover letter/portfolio development, job and internship search strategies, job shadowing, networking, and interview practice via video chat, in person, phone, and email
  • Document appointment outcomes through Career Center’s documentation system
  • Conduct weekly drop-in hours for career coaching topics
  • Interact with a diverse population of students (specifically international students), alumni, faculty, and occasionally employers
  • Learn industry specific terminology and have a basic understanding of disciplines within specific industries in the Technology, Data, and Analytics space

Programs/Presentations (20%): 

  • Conduct evening and daytime presentations on core career development topics such as resume creation, interviewing strategies, online career branding, etc. to classes and clubs/organizations of up to 200 people 
  • Lead and/or create Career Meet Ups for the Arts, Media, & Design Career Community for groups up to 15 people
  • Create and/or update presentations, tailoring them to the audience
  • Assist in the development and implementation of other major events from the office

Marketing (40%):

  • Contribute to the development and execution of marketing strategies to promote Career Center services and events.
  • Assist with creating content for email marketing campaigns targeted towards students in the Arts, Media, and Design Career Community.
  • Assist with managing and maintaining social media accounts (LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Pinterest) to increase engagement and visibility of Career Center initiatives.
  • At times may work with the Marketing Team to create visually appealing and engaging multimedia content (graphics, videos, infographics) for various marketing channels.
  • Participate in campus outreach efforts to promote Career Center resources and events to the student body.

Education Requirements:

Current student in a master’s level program at UNC Charlotte in a related field (e.g., Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Communications, Arts). All majors will be considered. First-year graduate students preferred. 

Qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with diverse student populations.
  • Knowledge of career development theories, resources, and best practices is a plus.
  • Experience in event planning and coordination is a plus.
  • Proficiency in social media platforms and familiarity with email marketing tools.
  • Creative mindset with a keen eye for design and multimedia content creation.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Passion for supporting students' career exploration and professional development in the arts, media, and design industries.

Term of Appointment and Stipend:  

  • Start date – Fall 2024 TBD
  • 20 hours/week, $18.00 per hour
  • Some evenings required
  • 2-year commitment preferred
