Job Description

Attorneys in Charlotte’s Office of Legal Affairs have challenging, wide-ranging practices and must be able to handle multiple, unrelated matters concurrently. The Research Counsel incumbent must be able to complete complex projects both independently and with direction from the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Integrity and General Counsel and the Associate Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs and Deputy General Counsel. The Research Counsel incumbent will be the primary attorney on research-related matters for the Office of Legal Affairs and will work closely alongside the other attorneys in the Office of Legal Affairs as well as administrators and staff in Charlotte’s Division of Research.

The Research Counsel incumbent will provide legal advice and assistance on all legal aspects of research at an urban research university, including intellectual property, compliance, export controls, conflicts of interest, and other issues integral to the institution’s research mission.

The Research Counsel incumbent will have other duties/focus areas as assigned by the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Integrity and General Counsel, and the Associate Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs and Deputy General Counsel based on personal experience and institutional need. As with all attorneys in the Office of Legal Affairs, the Research Counsel incumbent will be expected to research, provide advice on, and draft communications and legal documents regarding the full range of state and federal laws, regulations, and policies applicable to a UNC constituent institution.
