Jamil Niner Student Food Pantry Garden UPIP Intern Leadership & Community Engagement
Position Description: One in three college students experiences food insecurity. If you’re passionate about helping others and addressing food insecurity on campus while also working with volunteers in a leadership capacity, this internship is for you!
The Food Pantry Garden Interns are primarily dedicated to the administration of the Jamil Niner Pantry working with the Assistant Director of Leadership & Community Engagement and the Graduate Assistant. This position includes recruitment, organization and working with volunteers and student clients. This is a 10-hour-per-week position starting in August 2022 and ending in May 2023.
This internship is open to any major but would be an excellent opportunity for a Business, Public Administration, Public Health, or Social Work major.
Required Skills:
The person in this position must have:
- Excellent communication skills (both oral and written)
- Self-motivation, organization, customer service skills
- Knowledge about gardening vegetables in NC
- Competent in various computer programs
- Must be willing to be Van Driver Certified
- Must be willing to become Food Safe Certified
Responsibilities:
- Works 10 hours per week at the JNSP from August 2023 – May 2024 (Currently, the pantry is scheduled to be staffed from 10:30-5:00 pm Tuesdays/Wednesdays/Thursdays and intern hours would need to take place during that time for most of the time. Some hours may take place outside of this time as approved)
- Assists with all daily operations at the Jamil Niner Student Pantry (JNSP) including check-in, stocking, logging, and cleaning
- Works with volunteers, other interns, donors, & Leadership & Community Engagement (L&CE) staff to maintain the mission of JNSP
- Helps create volunteer opportunities for student groups, classes, and individual volunteers to assist at the pantry and maintain the garden
- Collaborates with on-campus groups to organize garden projects and plan seasonal planting
- Assists with Swipe Out Hunger Program
- Assists with leading volunteers with tasks such as:
Sorting and stocking shelves
Writing and coordinating volunteers to assist with donor thank you cards
