Position Title: Educator

 

Accountability: Educators report to the Education Manager

 

Job Classification and Compensation: Seasonal, part-time, hourly. $10 - $15/hour

 

About: Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation (Catawba Riverkeeper) was founded in 1997 as the 21st waterkeeper organization in the U.S. Now, proudly part of an international movement that boasts over 400 local organizations, we preserve, protect, and restore the waters of the Catawba-Wateree River Basin for all through education, advocacy, and engagement. Our 5,000 square mile river basin includes over 8,900 miles of waterways across 26 counties in North and South Carolina. 

 

Educators are the lead instructors for the implementation of Catawba Riverkeeper educational programs under the supervision of the Education Manager. They assist with curriculum development and execution, group management, and assessment for adult and youth programs. They provide outreach and engagement through educational programs about the Catawba Wateree River Basin and the mission of Catawba Riverkeeper. This position is seasonal to part-time with the majority of programs scheduled during the summer months and some during the school year.  

 

Responsibilities:

  • Proudly serves the local community, serving as a brand ambassador, promoting awareness and advocacy for the Catawba Riverkeeper and our mission.
  • Continues to develop “H20 Hydro Hands-on” curriculum.
  • Organizes program materials.
  • Responsible for program logistics from set-up to breakdown.
  • Acts as the lead educator during Riverkeeper facilitated programs.
  • Works as the liaison to program community partners as appropriate.
  • Manages conflict resolution situations with participants.
  • Maintains safe and enjoyable environment for participants.
  • Be a resource for additional program staff.
  • Teaches using an experiential learning style with participants.
  • Possible educational programs include day programs, summer camps, Floating Classroom, CREEK, Riverkeeper Learning Series.
  • Programs may include both land and water components.
  • Exemplifies the Catawba Riverkeeper mission statement and supports staff, departments and leadership in pursuing and achieving goals.
  • Performs any other duties needed to help drive to our vision, fulfill our mission, and abide by our values.

 

Requirements:

  • Exhibits a passion for the mission of Catawba Riverkeeper.
  • Successfully pass a standard background review.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends as needed
  • Must be able to lift at least 35 pounds
  • Must be able to traverse a variety of terrains
  • Will be required to work in a variety of weather conditions outdoors
  • Must have reliable personal transportation
  • Comfortable in the water on a kayak and on a motorized boat preferred

 

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Outdoor Education, Biology, Ecology, Geology, Geography, Education, or related field preferred.
  • 2+ years of demonstrated experience preferred in environmental education, teaching, or other education programming, for example licensed teachers, informal educators, camp counselors.
  • NC Environmental Educator certification or in the process preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively, creatively, and effectively with people of all ethnic, socio-economic, lifestyle, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Detail-oriented; consistently produces high-quality work without direct supervision.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Comfortable multi-tasking and working in a team environment.
  • CPR/AED Certification (or able to obtain).
