Position Overview

Reports to: Name Change Project Intake Associate.

Compensation: $17/hour

Type: Internship

 

This is an opportunity to play a role in our nation’s movement for transgender rights. It is also an opportunity to gain work experience in the non-profit sector with the support and mentorship of the full-time staff of TLDEF’s Name Change Project. The Name Change Project Intake Intern will assist transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary applicants who seek assistance from the Name Change Project for their legal name changes and identity document updates.

 

The summer internship is a ten-week, full-time position. Work hours will be agreed upon in advance and will generally be between 9:00am and 6:00pm Eastern. The internship is remote, and the intern may work from any location in which a confidential phone conversation may be held. The intern will be provided with a telephone platform to use for calls. We strongly encourage people with a record, with non-traditional work experience, people wanting to make a career change, and/or people without a high school diploma, GED, or college degree to apply.

 

Responsibilities

Intake Management

  • Become familiar with the Name Change Project’s eligibility criteria and intake procedures.
  • Using Microsoft Office and Calendly, schedule and correspond with applicants to support them in successful completion of the intake process.
  • Review intake form submissions for completeness.
  • Conduct phone intakes with applicants.
  • Using Salesforce, conduct complete and accurate data entry of client information and contact notes.
  • Assist applicants with collecting documents and records.
  • Attend and actively participate in regular weekly Name Change Project meetings and assist with note-taking.

  • Understanding of issues impacting low-income and transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary people.
  • Commitment to social, racial, economic, disability, and gender justice.
  • Eagerness to learn new skills and take on increasing levels of responsibility over the course of the internship.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills either by phone or email when interacting with potential and active participants across lines of difference. Customer service experience is a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • High level of attention to detail and thoroughness.
  • Resourcefulness and openness to identify and communicate opportunities for improvement to existing intake systems and procedures to better serve those who seek assistance from the Name Change Project.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a team.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of personally identifiable information and legally privileged information.
  • High degree of emotional intelligence.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluency or proficiency in Spanish.
  • Experience working with LGBTQ+ clients who have proximity to crisis or trauma.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office, Zoom, Slack, Asana, Calendly, and/or Salesforce.
