Job Description

Area 49 is the library’s collection of innovation spaces that facilitates innovative and creative learning by providing technology and equipment lending, research and design workspaces, and emerging technologies services. Area 49’s spaces include the Area 49 Desk, Makerspace, Gaming Lab, Visualization Lab, EZ Video Studio, Multimedia Lab, Photogrammetry Lab, and T3.

Makerspace Monitors will not only staff Area 49’s Makerspace, but will also work on technology-based and creative projects designed to enhance the spaces themselves and the Makerspace’s instructional goals. Interns will receive training in operating Makerspace technology, including the 3D printers, laser cutter, CNC router, sewing machines, large format printer and scanner, and much more, and will provide assistance with such technology once learned. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Staffing the Makerspace, which includes the following:
    • Assisting patrons with Makerspace technology problems;
    • Performing basic troubleshooting for Makerspace technology, including machines, computers, and software;
    • Providing information to patrons about library technology services including policies and procedures;
    • Monitoring Makerspace supplies;
    • Completing Makerspace opening and closing procedures;
    • Referring patrons to appropriate departments and staff as needed;
    • Providing exemplary customer service in-person, via telephone, and email;
    • Assisting in other tasks as needed
  • Working on technology-related projects by:
    • Developing instructions for using specific technologies;
    • Preparing items and workflows in preparation for classes and workshops;
    • Developing resources to promote or enhance the spaces;

Preferred Experience, Skills, and Competencies

  • Strong customer service and communications skills;
  • Ability to problem solve and multitask;
  • Proficient with email and Google Drive;
  • Can quickly learn new software and hardware
  • Ability to make rapid decisions and discuss issues with patrons in a clear, calm, and diplomatic manner;
  • Experience with Mac and Windows operating systems;
  • Prompt, dependable, and reliable;
  • Detail-oriented;
  • Ability to work in a team environment;
  • Must be able to lift 20 lbs

Schedule

The Makerspace is open from 10am-4pm Monday through Friday and applicants must be available to work 15 hours within that time frame. Hours may vary depending on semester, but applicants can expect to work the same times throughout a single semester.
