Job Description

Peer Guides serve UNC Charlotte as paraprofessionals in the CHESS Office of Advising & Student Services. 

Some of the benefits of becoming a Peer Guide in The Office of Advising & Student Services include: 

  • Real world leadership and problem solving experiences 
  • Specialized training in College of Humanities, Earth, and Social Sciences and UNC Charlotte academic requirements and regulations 
  • Working with a team of other Peer Guides and 1:1 mentorship with a full-time Academic Advisor
  • $12 per hour, 10 hours a week 

Trained Peer Guides will work with undergraduate students, primarily freshmen, and help with academic concerns and on campus resource referrals. Peer Guides will work with students through various interactions including 1:1 meetings (in person & virtual),  & email. 

Specific responsibilities include: 

  • Assist students with advising needs such as: creating class schedules, how to get involved on campus, finding academic resources, & explaining academic policies. 
  • Advertise the Peer Guides Program to all undergraduate CHESS students through class presentations, emails, & flyers. 
  • Be responsive to students' concerns through emails and follow up in questions that cannot be answered in appointments. 
  • Refer students to full-time Academic Advisors or other appropriate university faculty/staff or resources as needed. 
  • Represent the College of Humanities, Earth, and Social Sciences as a student ambassador at selected university events such as EXPLORE, Admitted Students' Day, etc. 
  • Become familiar with academic regulations and CHESS core requirements. 
  • Provide coverage of The Office of Advising & Student Services front desk as needed. 
  • Actively participate in weekly staff meetings that focus on professionalism, collaboration, brain-storming, & creating programs. 
  • Provide support to the The Office of Advising & Student Services by working on projects that include but are not limited to: facilitating group advising presentations, serving as a back up drop-in advisor, preparing curriculum guides, writing blog posts, and calling/texting campaigns.
  • Participate in training prior to the start of fall classes and continuous training via weekly staff meetings. 
  • Meet weekly with a Professional Advisor for progress discussion and professional/career development.
