Job Description

New York is leading the nation in the fight on global climate change and the transition to a clean energy-powered economy. The Climate Act (https://climate.ny.gov/) has created the most aggressive climate change goals in the nation and requires an ambitious agenda that blends proven catalysts with innovative approaches while operating across a broader energy arena that is rapidly evolving. New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA) is a driving force in realizing this agenda. NYSERDA works with stakeholders that span residents, business owners, developers, community leaders, local government officials, universities, utilities, investors, entrepreneurs, and more, to develop, invest, and foster conditions that:

  • Attract the private sector capital investment needed to expand New York's clean energy economy.

  • Overcome barriers to using clean energy at a large-scale in New York.

  • Enable New York's communities and residents to benefit equitably from energy efficiency and renewable energy.

To help the state meet these aggressive goals, NYSERDA's Codes, Products, and Standards (CPS) team will be critical to shaping pathways, policies, and mandates related to energy codes and product standards. These efforts are intended to help NYSERDA improve energy code as a means of reducing the carbon impact of new construction and building renovations. These efforts are aimed at improving energy code compliance and enforcement and increasing local adoption of more stringent energy codes. NYSERDA is also conducting research and expecting to competitively select pilot projects to improve energy code enforcement and test more stringent energy code provisions in communities across New York State.

In addition to code-related work, the CPS is also heavily involved in rulemaking efforts for minimum efficiency standards for a range of products and appliances. This includes compliance monitoring of existing New York State appliance standards and development of new standards to be promulgated in 2025. For standards that are preempted by the federal government, NYSERDA also participates in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) rulemaking process to develop test procedures and minimum efficiency standards for more than 65 product categories. On behalf of New York State, the CPS team submits public comment letters to advocate for higher efficiency standards, particularly those that can help reduce GHG emissions and help the state meet its ambitious climate goals.

This internship will provide an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to support the efforts of NYSERDA's Codes, Products, and Standards team to support the aforementioned project initiatives. This internship is an opportunity to work directly alongside NYSERDA staff members to implement energy code programs and training, and statewide appliance and equipment efficiency standards. Interns who are interested in energy efficiency, clean energy solution, environmental science, or business management are encouraged to apply.

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

This is a paid internship for current students at an accredited college. The pay rate is from $16 to $19 per hour based on current class year. This internship will begin on June 3rd, 2024, and continue through Summer 2024 or Fall 2024.

Interns must be located in New York State while working. It is expected that interns will follow our telework policy, with a combination of in-office and remote work. Interns work up to 18.5 hours per week during the semester, and up to 37.5 hours per week between semesters, when not attending classes.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with statewide energy code training, including:

  • Tracking upcoming training and scrubbing attendance lists.

  • Draft communications and program documents.

  • Assist with coordination of competitive mini-bids and solicitation review meetings with staff and external stakeholders.

  • Attend and summarize key takeaways from webinars related to energy code or product standards.
