The Balancing Act: Maintaining artistic rigor while making your statement
Presenter: Jonell Logan, Independent Curator
Moderator: Dr. Suzanne Voigt
Thursday, July 30th 12 – 1 pm
We’ve all experienced public art that just doesn’t seem to work. Sometimes the disconnect is about the viewer’s personal taste - we just don’t like it (which is fair). Other times, however we are witnessing the artists’ struggle to balance meaning, aesthetics and technique. This conversation will explore some of the pitfalls for artists creating “meaningful” public work, and discuss how artists can successfully include social and political commentary while maintaining their voice and a rigorous artistic practice.
