Therapeutic Art in an Oncology Setting
Presenter: Susan Yaguda, Manager of Integrative Oncology
Moderator: Jamie Franki
Thursday, July 9th 12- 1 pm
Those diagnosed with cancer and their care partners encounter a wide range of responses and symptoms. These can include changes in body image, pain, emotional distress (depression and anxiety), and social isolation. Often communicating one’s experience is challenging. Therapeutic art provides a platform for symptom mitigation and processing and communicating one’s unique experience. Through this presentation, participants will learn differences between art therapy and therapeutic art, explore a variety of expressive art interventions for specific symptom mitigation and discuss ways to collaborate with other healthcare providers to assist with patient and care partner needs. Safety guidelines for working with the oncology population will be covered, as well as art interventions for specific cancer treatment types (radiation, transplant, chemotherapy, surgery). Self-care and maintaining healthy boundaries while working in a healthcare setting will also be discussed. In addition, learners will hear specific patient experiences using art as a therapeutic intervention.
