Art in the Military
Presenter: Alex Bostic, Illustrator and Professor at Mississippi State University
Thursday, July 23rd 12 – 1 p m
Moderator: A.J. Simmons, Assistant Director for the Peer Career Ambassador Program
Description
Military art creates a visual account of soldiers in active duty serving humanitarian missions throughout the world. The subject matter encompasses many aspects of war, and the individual's experience of war, whether allied or enemy, service or civilian, military or political, social or cultural. This presentation will discuss the expression of cultures and significant legacies that combine artistic and documentary functions to depict a pictorial portrayal of military scenes and show "how war shapes lives." It represents an attempt to come to terms with the nature and reality of violence. Military art is typically rendered as representational, captures factual eyewitness detail, and emotional impression based on the artist's interpretation of those events.
