Bio of Ryan Gibson
I joined the Marines Corps directly out of high school in 2009. I served for six years from 2009 to 2015. For the first three years I served as an explosive ordnance technician out of Miramar California. With my unit I deployed to operation Tomodachi in Japan, a tour of Southeast Asia, as well as about 6 months of combat support for Operation Enduring Freedom. As soon as I returned from my deployment, I was accepted into the Marine Corps Security Group, a special duty assignment within the Corps that allowed me to guard American Embassies all over the world.
I spent about a year and a half in Cairo, Egypt during the Arab spring and the Egyptian revolution. My primary function was guarding the American embassy, as well as the personnel and classified material within. Immediately following Egypt, I transferred to Quito Ecuador where I served for over a year and a half. I served as the assistant, and the acting Detachment Commander for the Marines in Ecuador.
I departed the Marine Corps in October of 2015. I began college in 2009 at CPCC. After one semester and a summer I transferred to UNCC where I majored in both Environmental Studies and Geography. I graduated with honors after three and a half years in May 2019.
While studying at UNCC I held several jobs, including a couple of internships supported by the University. I served as a Teacher’s Aide. I worked as a research assistant at Bartlett Tree Experts’ research and diagnostics laboratory in Charlotte. I worked as an Environmental Health Intern for Gaston County’s Department of Environmental Health.
For two and a half years, while attending UNCC, I worked at Novant Health as a Public Safety Officer. I specialized in conflict mediation, emergency response and preparedness, emergency medical response, and hospital safety and preparedness training. I responded to numerous events including medical interventions, natural disasters, as well as physical threats against the hospital and personnel.
In June 2019 I moved to Washington D.C. to begin working as a private sector contractor for the federal government, under a company called the Cadmus Group. I served several offices under the department of homeland security. Primarily, The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Individual and Community Preparedness Division (ICPD), FEMA’s Doctrine office, the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Water Security team, and most recently, the office of Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (CWMD).
As of March, I have been hired as the Manager of Global Safety and Security for a non-profit called the International Republican Institute. I begin this work in April 2020.
